DIY Trip vs. All-Inclusive Package: How to Pick?

DIY Trip vs. All-Inclusive Package: How to Pick?

Isn’t it tempting to hand over your documents to a travel agent and get everything planned for you, down to the last detail? They’ll get the visa done, book the flights, even book hotels with breakfast included. You’ll have chauffeurs picking you up from the airport and dropping you at the attractions you want to visit. All of this sounds fantastic, until you see the bill. The markup? At least 2 to 3x.

We compared this twice, once for Australia and once for Japan. We got quotes for both, since we too didn’t want the hassle of planning everything ourselves and navigating every ride, every turn.

Comparing Quotes: Australia and Japan

Before we get into numbers, here’s the honest context: we weren’t even trying to cut costs aggressively. We just wanted to compare what a tour operator would charge us against what we’d naturally spend planning it ourselves. The gap surprised us.

For our Australia leg, covering Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, the operator quoted around 5 lakh INR, without flights. When we asked to swap Brisbane for the Gold Coast, the price shot up further, to 7 lakhs, since the Gold Coast is popular and everything there costs more. Our round-trip flights for two alone cost 1.52 lakhs, so even before the rest of the trip, flights were already a meaningful chunk of our budget. And yet, what did we actually spend in total, flights included? Roughly half of what we were quoted. This was despite staying in 4-star properties in the center of town, with flights booked just 3 months in advance.

Guided Tours vs. Self-Paced Sightseeing

When you’re on your own, you can decide on the spot whether to spend more time somewhere or move on to the next place. With a tour operator, the hours are usually fixed, and you don’t get to properly cover a spot or linger longer, even if you want to.

For instance, at Fushimi Inari, one of the best spots in Japan, we hiked all the way to the top because we had the time. Meanwhile, many tour groups arrived, climbed just a couple of stairs for a quick photo, and rushed back to their bus. I honestly wanted to ask: where’s the enjoyment here? Are you here just for a couple of pictures for your socials? It made me realize how much of the actual experience you miss out on when you’re racing against a strict schedule. If you’ve flown all that way, you want to absorb the atmosphere, not just check off a box.

The same thing happened at Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the sloped streets leading up to Kiyomizu-dera temple. Those streets were so peaceful, we wanted to just stay there and take them in for hours. Had we been on a guided tour, we would have been disappointed for sure. We watched a tour guide gather their group in front of the temple for a quick photo and usher them away almost immediately. If you hope to dress up in a kimono and take your time getting photographed in front of the temple, a tight tour schedule simply will not allow it. So plan accordingly.

Traveling Like a Local

On a guided tour, all you remember afterward is the places you saw, not how you got there. Exploring like a local means taking the bus, the subway, and the local train wherever needed. Instead of hopping into a car or bus right outside your hotel and stepping out at the attraction.

Sure, navigating local transport can feel like a hassle at times, but that’s the best way to actually explore a place. In doing so, you stumble upon experiences no itinerary could ever plan. In Osaka, for instance, we caught a small pop-up performance while walking out of the train station, something we could never have planned for.

The Choice: When to Pick a Tour vs. DIY

If you’re traveling with old parents or young kids, a tour package makes sense. This is because they may not be up for walking to the train station or the bus stop every time. But if you’re traveling with friends or as a couple, it’s worth exploring the place like a local instead.
